How do magazine images affect a person's image of his/her self? Is the way these models are being portrayed realistic?
I would start by organizing my research by collecting several magazine genres and take a look at the images and how airbrushed they might be or enhanced by digital retouching. From there, select certain images that may alter the way a person may feel about them self such as a thin and beautiful model or an athlete with a 6 pack and a perfectly toned body. Even images from architectural and home and garden magazines can give a person insecurities about their home decor and how to keep up with modern style and remodeling. I can begin my analysis with different survey methods such as random sampling and selective perception. I would also like to target schools whose students may have a higher influence on personal image such as fashion/art schools and athletes. I will use surveys that I've created to see how much of an influence certain images/topics alter a person's view of his/her self and if it makes any difference on how they go about their diets and wardrobe.
Sometimes people can't identify where they get their influences, but you can test how people react in the moment to specific images.
